What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a permanent cover to restore a tooth’s size, shape, or function. Crowns made of ceramic or porcelain look just like natural teeth. They also feel the same in your mouth.

Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, PFM (porcelain fused to metal), and metal. The type of dental crowns the dentist recommends will depend on various factors, including:

  • The crown’s location in your mouth
  • The color of your teeth
  • The position of your gum tissue
  • Your budget

To ensure a custom fit on crowns not made in-house, we will have an outside laboratory manufacture your permanent crown using impressions we take in the office. Since this usually requires one week, we will place a temporary crown in your mouth to protect the tooth. When the permanent crown comes back from the lab, we will place the crown and make any needed adjustments.

Caring for Your Crown

As always, your oral hygiene routine should include proper brushing and flossing, which also applies to your dental crowns. Additionally, you should not bite down on hard foods or use your teeth as a bottle opener. It is also advised not to smoke cigarettes or use chewing tobacco. Lastly, you should use a mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night.

We use the latest technology and best materials to ensure the comfort and longevity of your dental crowns. With proper care, they can last for decades.

Reasons to Have Dental Crowns

Firefly Family Dentistry will recommend dental crowns for a variety of reasons, such as to:

  • Protect a tooth that is cracked or weakened by tooth decay
  • Restore the function and size of a decayed or worn-down tooth
  • Serve as an anchor for a dental bridge to cover a missing tooth
  • Cover a misshapen, yellowed, or discolored tooth
  • Cover and protect a dental implant

How Much Are Dental Crowns?

The cost of dental crowns will vary based on the materials and whether they are made in the office or at a lab. Some teeth also require more procedures to prepare for the crown than others. Finally, your dental insurance will impact how much you have to pay out of pocket. In general, dental crowns will range from $500 to $2,000 each before insurance. Convenient financing is available.
